In Chicago Steve Petty had the chance to watch Flora Duffy and the world’s best men and women triathletes compete in the Chicago World Series Olympic Triathlon. Petty also raced in the Olympic distance age group event and was a very respectable 9th in the 60-65 age group in 2.29.24 although the results show a DQ for one run lap short. However, Steve said the event was badly organized with a lot of result discrepancies and assured me he completed the course. Former Bda resident Travis Cooper finished in 2.24.09 for 47th in the mens 40-44 age group.

SMITH AND MURPHY TAKE SPRINT TITLES

There were no surprises today at the Aon National Sprint Triathlon Championships as Tucker Murphy and Karen Smith took the male and female national titles as 76 individual competitors took to the start line under humid conditions at Clearwater.

Photos below and at Bermuda Triathlon Photos link on this blog in LINKS section in next 48 hours.

Karl Wilson was the early men’s leader after the 750m swim (which appeared to be about 125 meters long) but was soon caught by a fast charging Murphy, veteran triathlete Kent Richardson, Mark Robinson and Matt Thompson. Richardson put in a blistering 20km bike (fastest by over a minute) to catch Murphy but only entered the bike to run transition with a slender lead and with Murphy much the stronger runner the writing was on the wall. Murphy moved into the lead on the first lap of the 5km run and was a comfortable winner in 1hr 7 mins and 1 sec. In an exciting finish Richardson and Robinson sprinted for the line with Richardson seeming to cross the line first but the official results show Robinson 1 sec ahead of Richardson with a time of 1hr 10 mins 21 secs. Thompson was a comfortable 4th.

The women’s race was predictable with nothing to chose between Smith and Laurie Orchard going into the run but Smith slowly pulled away on the run to win in 1 : 12 : 04 (5th overall) with Orchard 2nd in 1: 13:33 (6th overall). In another tense finish Belinda Castree held off a fast finishing Amber Mehta by 6 secs to take 3rd overall with Mehta in 4th.

DUFFY 18TH IN CHICAGO – PILGRIM 5th (provisional) IN UK

Flora Duffy
Flora Duffy

Flora Duffy continued her preparation for the Commonwealth Games with a solid performance in the Chicago World Series Triathlon today, Saturday 28th June. In a very strong field that included most of the world’s top ranked Olympic distance triathletes, Duffy finished a creditable 18th out of 50 in a fast 1 hr, 59 mins and 45 secs for the 1500 m swim, 40km bike and 10km run after a long absence from this format of racing as her focus has been on XTerra races in recent months.

Duffy exited the water with the lead swimmers but will have been disappointed to miss an early break on the bike that saw her coming in to transition some 30 secs behind the lead group that included two very fast runners in Juri Ido of Japan and the UK’s Helen Jenkins. These two soon distanced the other early leaders but did not count on outstanding US triathlete Gwen Jorgensen making up a minute on them with a blistering 34.14 10km run to take her 3rd win of the year with Jenkins 2nd and Ido 3rd.Jorgensen finished in 1 hr 55 mins 34 secs.

Duffy’s splits were 21.01 swim , 58.48 bike and 38.23 run.

Meanwhile 13 year old Alex Pilgrim raced for the first time since starting at Bournemouth Collegiate School as a boarder a few weeks ago and finished a very creditable 5th out of 30 in the 13/14 draft legal Bowood Tri Stars Triathlon (provisional results only). Pilgrim completed the 400m swim ( closer to 500m according to dad Ian Pilgrim) in 8 min 25 secs, the 9km bike in 17 : 43 and the 2.5km run in 9:40 in a race that included an 800m hill run transition between the swim and bike. Fortunately the weather held off until the run when very heavy rain came down. The winning time was 35 mins 29 secs.

ALEX PILGRIM TO RACE IN UK

ALEX PILGRIM
ALEX PILGRIM

One of Bermuda’s exciting junior prospects, Alex Pilgrim, recently enrolled in Bournemouth Collegiate School where he is taking advantage of their inschool triathlon programme run by Bernie Shrosbree and his son Gregg. Bernie is a good friend of Steve Trew who has ofcourse been coming to Bermuda for many years for our junior summer triathlon camps.

I had the chance to ride with Alex a week ago when in the UK and he seems to be settling in well.

This weekend Alex will be able to match himself against some top UK juniors as he competes in the inter regional qualifier for the South West Region in the TriStars age group (13-14) draft legal race. The first 3 boys and girls qualify for the Inter Regional championships in Nottingham the 3rd week in August. Then On Sunday 6 July he competes in a 13-14 draft legal race at Eton Dorney in the UK before flying back to Bermuda for his summer vacation.

Alex’s results will be posted here but you can get more information on his races by clicking on the links below :
