Karl Wilson was the early men’s leader after the 750m swim (which appeared to be about 125 meters long) but was soon caught by a fast charging Murphy, veteran triathlete Kent Richardson, Mark Robinson and Matt Thompson. Richardson put in a blistering 20km bike (fastest by over a minute) to catch Murphy but only entered the bike to run transition with a slender lead and with Murphy much the stronger runner the writing was on the wall. Murphy moved into the lead on the first lap of the 5km run and was a comfortable winner in 1hr 7 mins and 1 sec. In an exciting finish Richardson and Robinson sprinted for the line with Richardson seeming to cross the line first but the official results show Robinson 1 sec ahead of Richardson with a time of 1hr 10 mins 21 secs. Thompson was a comfortable 4th.
The women’s race was predictable with nothing to chose between Smith and Laurie Orchard going into the run but Smith slowly pulled away on the run to win in 1 : 12 : 04 (5th overall) with Orchard 2nd in 1: 13:33 (6th overall). In another tense finish Belinda Castree held off a fast finishing Amber Mehta by 6 secs to take 3rd overall with Mehta in 4th.
