The hard work of our leading juniors, Erica Hawley and Tyler Smith, has paid off as they have both been invited to participate in the Youth Olympics in Nanjing.
They race individually (Erica on Aug 17th and Tyler on Aug 18th) and they will both get to do the relay format on Aug 21st. Teams will be based on ITU regions and determined after the individual races. (*they may or may not get to be on the same team, depends how they finish). This will be a first for Bermuda to have athletes in a relay.
They will be leaving on Monday, Aug 11 with Karen Smith, the team manager for triathlon, going with them.
They’ve both had a great lead up and preparation races all year long and are very excited to represent Bermuda. There are only 32 entrants in each race. Each country can only send one male and one female. The ages are between 16-17 as of the end of the year.
The YOG also have a large cultural and education component and Tyler and Erica will be required to attend seminars, historical sites, etc.
