Here is Karen Smith’s race report from the Ironman 70.3 World Championships raced today, 7th September at which she finished 8th ( see earlier post today).

The race went fairly well. The swim was good for me but a little crowded trying to get through some of the earlier waves. I felt great on the bike but lots of drafting. Once we got to the highway there was a significant head wind but it was a little flatter and this is where big, no actually huge pelotons formed of 40-50 people. I was disappointed that I never saw a marshall once! There were women riding right on my wheel for miles. It was pretty much a bike race until we got to the hills again where people got dropped, thankfully. I started my run but I knew right away it was going to be a challenge. The hills were tough. I just couldn’t run fast. I wanted to get moving but the legs refused. I couldn’t expect a good run so just kind of got through it. I’m happy enough. Lots of people thought this course was hard!
