Tyler Butterfield and Karen Smith will represent Bermuda tomorrow, Saturday 11th February, at the Ironman World Championships 2014 in Kona, Hawaii.
Tyler has stated that his aim is to finish in the top ten but having come so close to a podium position last year, when he finished 7th after holding 4th place until close to the end of the run, he will no doubt sbe hoping to improve on last year’s result.
Karen finished an impressive 3rd in her age group in the 2010 Ironman World Championships in 10 hrs 16 mins. After having to withdraw last year due to illness she will no doubt be fired up for this event. Her 8th place finish at Ironman 70.3 Worlds in the 45-49 age group in September should give her confidence going into these longer distance championships as her preparation was less than ideal for that race.
Tyler’s race gets underway at 6.30AM and Karen starts at 7AM (both Hawaii time). You can follow their progress during the race by going to the event website ( click on the link below) and then the RESULTS section and then to “Athlete Tracker” . There is usually also video coverage and Tyler might well be featured in that coverage.
