A group of Bermuda’s most promising junior triathletes head to Florida over the next couple of weeks to get their season underaway as they test themselves against some of the best juniors in the US, Mexico and Canada.

12 year old Nick Pilgrim, the youngest competitor, will race this weekend on Sunday 8th March in the Clermont Youth F1 draft legal challenge for 12-16 year olds which gets underway at 9.50AM Bermuda time. Having just gone 12 Nick will be right at the bottom of the age group but he is already an experienced triathlete so this race should be a good test for him. The distances are super sprint – 375m swim, 10k bike and 2.5k run. There are 75 entrants in the boys race, and 75 in the girls. Brother Alex Pilgrim did this race last year when there were only 30 participants so the increase in numbers is evidence of the growing popularity of the sport in the USA.

The following weekend a group of juniors will be racing in Sarasota. With a year’s experience racing at the top level in 2014, Erica Hawley and Tyler Smith will hope to continue to build on their success last season as they will start in the very competitive CAMTRI North American Championships featuring some of the best 16-19 juniors from the US, Canada and Mexico. They will race over 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run and again the bike will be draft legal. Erica Hawley will get underway at 9.30AM Bermuda time on Saturday 14th March with Tyler starting the same morning at 11AM Bermuda time.

Nick Pigrim will be joined on Sunday 15th March by elder brother Alex and Lynsey Palmer in another F1 12-16 super sprint series race , in Sarasota, on the same loop course as the CAMTRI race . Again there will be full fields for these races of 75 boys and 75 girls. This race will be the promising Lynsey Palmer’s first draft legal race. Their race gets underway at 11.30AM Bermuda time.
