MARK WILCOX and MARTINA OLCHESKI-BELL RESULTS AT PUERTO RICO IRONMAN 70.3 – RACE MARRED BY SHOOTING

In a race marred by shocking injuries to two competitors who got caught in crossfire gun shots on the bike course, Mark Wilcox and Martina Olcheski-Bell produced excellent performances at the Ironman 70.3 in Puerto Rico on Sunday. More on the shooting below. Mark did not mention the shooting to me so don’t know if he or Martina were aware of it.

Despite struggling recently with a running injury, Mark finished an excellent 2nd in the 45-49 age group with times of 33 min 33 secs for the 1.2 mile swim ( 19th fastest in age group), 2 hrs 26 mins 37 secs for the 56 mile bike ( 7th in age group) and 1hr 38 mins 52 secs for the 13.1 mile run ( 2nd in age group) for an overall time of 4 hrs 44 mins and 47 secs.

Martina was 9th in the 30-34 age group with a 31:11 swim (4th), 2:52:16 (14th) and 1:45:55 (9th) for an overall time of 5 hrs 22 mins and 42 secs.

Professionals Sarah Haskins of the USA and Igor Amorelli of Brazil were the overall winners.

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Two competitors in a Puerto Rico Ironman triathlon were injured by gunfire exchanged between occupants of two cars as they sped past the bicycling part of the Sunday event in an upscale area of the U.S. island’s capital.

Puerto Rico police identified the wounded competitors as Wisconsin woman Liz Boivin, 26, and island resident Miguel Arroyo Ramos, 49. Boivin was hit in the left calf while three bullets struck Arroyo in the left side while they raced on bicycles through the San Juan district of Miramar. The triathlon involves biking, running and swimming.
