Tyler Smith and Martina Olcheski – Bell were crowned as AON National Sprint Triathlon champions today at Clearwater Beach.
16 year old Tyler continued his impressive season, which has seen him qualify for the 16 – 19 Junior Elite World Championships, as he dominated the field from the start to win by three minutes and a half minutes. He posted a fast 9 mins 32 secs for the 750 meter swim with Olympic Distance National Triathlon champion Jon Herring and Karl Wilson next out of the water 11/2 minutes behind.
Tyler soon dispelled any hope the chasers might have had of catching him as he completed the 20km bike in 32 mins 50 secs, the second fastest bike time to start the 5km run with a comfortable lead. He then increased his lead on the 5km run with the fastest time of 19 mins 10 secs , over a minute quicker than the next quickest time, to finish in 1hr 2 mins 14 secs. Behind him Jon Herring stayed comfortably in 2nd place to finish in 1hr 5 mins 49 secs with Tucker Murphy moving into 3rd and veteran Neil de ste Croix in 4th with the fastest bike split.
Martina Olcheski – Bell has had a fantastic season as she completed the double having won the National Olympic Distance Championships last month. Once again she took advantage of Karen Smith’s inability to complete the run due to a recurring foot injury to post an impressive win as she continues to improve with each race.
Martina exited the water with Karen in 11 mins 57 secs but Karen was quicker out of transition. Martina then matched her on the bike posting a time of 36 mins 57 secs to Smith’s time of 36 mins 51 secs to enter transition just 30 secs in arrears. Once Karen withdrew Martina was not going to be caught as she completed the 5km run in 23 mins 55 secs to finish in 1hr 13 min 56 secs, good enough for 12th place overall. Kristen Palmer took another strong podium position as she finished 2nd in 1 hr 16 mins 19 secs and Amber Mehta was third in 1hr 17 mins 40 secs.
There were a total of 61 finishers.
