MARIO VANHOENACKER OF BELGIUM WINS IRONMAN BRASIL TODAY AFTER A BLISTERING BIKE.
MARINO VANHOENACKER OF BELGIUM WINS IRONMAN BRASIL TODAY AFTER A BLISTERING BIKE.

In a very fast race in which the top four finishers all broke 8 hours, Tyler Butterfield finished 5th today at Ironman Brasil in Florianopolis in 8 hrs 5 mins 22 secs. However his result might have been better had he not had to wait 5 minutes in the penalty box after the bike portion for what was presumably a drafting violation. If he had not had to serve the penalty he would have exited T2 with the USA’s Tim O’Donnell, Canada’s Brent McMahon and defending champion from Brazil, Igor Amorelli and looking at the run times he could well have been in the mix for a podium place.

Belgium’s Marino Vanhoenacker was over 6 minutes ahead off the bike but his lead was quickly eaten into by O’Donnell and McMahon and at one point O’Donnell got to within a minute of him. However Vanhoeneckerathen recorded a negative split second half of the marathon to hold off O’Donnell. McMahon, from Victoria BC, Canada,in only his 2nd Ironman, recorded a 2nd sub 8 hour Ironman ; one to watch !!

IRONMAN Latin American Championship Podium:
1. Vanhoenacker 7:53:44
2. O’Donnell 7:55:56
3. McMahon 7:56:5

4. Igor Amorelli  7:59:36
