When Flora Duffy exited the water today after the 1500m swim in 2nd place it looked as though she was poised to try and break away with a group on the bike. However, it was not to be as on the fast Chicago 40km bike course she simply could not shake off a strong group of 13 riders that contained most of the prerace favorites.
With so many outstanding runners in that lead group off the bike Flora’s chances of a top ten finish were always going to be tough as so it proved to be. Overwhelming prerace favorite Gwen Jorgensen cruised to victory with easily the fastest run of the day to take gold ahead of the UK’s Non Stanford and Vicky Holland.
Flora will be disappointed with her run time of 35:37 as her recent form suggested she might run in the low 34 minutes which would have given her a possible top 5 finish although it would have taken a 33 min + run to podium such was the speed at the front.
Next up for Flora is the XTerra Triathlon World Championships on November 1st, 2015 where she will be the defending champion.
