Maria Duffy led the way as 16 of Bermuda’s age group triathletes raced today at the World Championships in Chicago watched by Flora Duffy.

Maria finished 11th in the women’s 60-64 age group just missing out on a top ten finish.  Maria completed the 1500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run in 2hrs 51 mins 47 secs.

The weather played havoc with Thursday’s and Friday’s schedule but today it was the later age group starters who were informed late on that their swim was cut to 750 meters, evidently due to strong currents in the lake.

Bermuda’s other finishers were :

FULL DISTANCE :

Jonny Betts   2 : 25 : 20  104th in 40-44 age group

Frances Betts  2: 48 : 52  73rd in 40 -44 age group

Sharon Craig  2 : 57 : 01 44th in 55-59 age group

SHORTENED SWIM :

Deanna Didyk  2 : 29 : 04  62nd in 45-49 age group

Ben Lau  2 : 11 :49  109th in 45-49 age group

Alec Shepherd  2 : 05 : 41  85th in 45-49 age group

Travis Cooper did not start

The bike course appears to have been at least 2km short of the 40km but the run might have been slightly long. Combined with a very fast flat course this led to fast times across the age groups.

Former Bermuda residents Kim McMullen and Riann Naude ( who are married) both represented Canada with Riann sadly a DNF after a flat early on the bike and Kim having a great race finishing 10th in the women’s 45-49 age group.

Bermuda resident Kim McIvor raced for Canada in the sprint event on Friday finishing in 1 : 26 : 16 in the 35-39 age group which put her 71st in her age group.
