Tyler Butterfield produced perhaps the greatest performance of his triathlon career as he just finished 5th at the Ironman World Championships in perhaps the strongest field ever assembled at Kona.
Tyler was well positioned in 9th off the bike but as other athletes faded in the heat, Tyler, who has always raced well in the heat, moved up into 5th place, beating his previous best of 7th a couple of years ago.
Live video feed showed Tyler being greeted at the line by daughter Savannah and son Walker.
Pre race favorite Jan Frodeno, who won the 2015 IRONMAN 70.3 Championships and gold in the Beijing Olympics, held on to beat a fast finishing Andreas Raelert, also from Germany, who took 2nd place for the 4th time with Tyler’s training partner, Tim O’Donnell in 3rd.
Tyler has one again shown that he is amongst the best in the world. His name was not mentioned in pre race reports on the mens race but he proved that he has the ability to podium in these gruelling championships.
