Two of Bermuda’s leading junior triathletes race this weekend in Clermont, Florida.
Erica Hawley, fresh from a very encouraging performance in San Diego ( see previous post on this blog), will once again race with the adult elite women in the CAMTRI Pan American Cup over 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run. The field will as usual feature many established US and Canadian triathletes and up and coming junior 16-19 elite triathletes, some of whom Erica knows well, having raced against them on previous occasions. If Erica can finish the swim with a lead group she is more than capable of holding her own on the bike and her much improved run in San Diego ( where she broke 20 mins for the first time in a triathlon over this run distance) will have done her confidence the world of good.
Promising Bermuda junior Nick Pilgrim, 13,will once again race in the competitive F1 Series triathlon for ages 12-16. The race consists of a 375m swim, 10km bike and 2.5 km run and is draft legal on the bike.
Nick is no stranger to this type of racing having raced in numerous races abroad including at this race last year when as a 12 year old he finished 39th but with only 6 12-13 year olds ahead of him. This year he will be hoping to move up the field and close the gap on the older juniors. Last year the winner recorded a time of 31:45 to Nick’s 37:36.
Erica’s race gets underway at 10AM this Saturday 5th March (11AM Bermuda time) whilst Nick will race at 8.30AM this Sunday 6th March (9.30AM Bermuda time).
