Tyler Smith and Erica Hawley made a great start to their junior season on Saturday competing in the CAMTRI North American Championships in Sarasota, Florida. Tyler finished 8th in 56 min 54 secs, 3 1/2 mins quicker than last year, whilst Erica was 16th in 1hr 3 mins and 29 secs, 5 mins quicker than last year.
The event attracts the best juniors from Canada, USA and Mexico and athletes from South America racing over 750m swim, 20km draft legal bike and 5km run.
In the junior men’s event, three athletes got off the front after a quick swim but Tyler had a strong swim of 9 mins 39 secs and settled into the 2nd pack of riders, completing the bike in 29.17. He then had a solid run of 16 min 55 secs.The race was won by Oliver Blecher of Canada, one of the lead group of three on the swim / bike, in 55 min 33 secs. Tyler was just 38 secs of a podium place. 60 juniors started.
Erica had a solid swim of 10 min 55 secs but off the small lead group who emerged from the water in around 10:15. Erica settled into the 2nd pack of riders and worked hard on the front of that group finishing the bike in 31.13 and then produced a solid run of 20 min 09 secs for the 5km. 46 juniors started the event and 44 finished.
