Flora Duffy produced a race today that everyone is talking about as she finished 3rd in the Cape Town leg of the Triathlon World Series, a result that lifted her to the No.1 ranking on points in the world series.
Flora clearly showed from the start that she was determined to finally make the podium after two fourth place finishes and in particular as she was racing in front of a “home” crowd (Flora makes this part of South Africa a second home and had alot of support).
She emerged from the 750 meter swim with a slender 16 second lead but decided to go for broke on the 20km bike, her strongest discipline. After opening up a 30 second lead she was finally brought back by a chasing group of thirty but despite her efforts on the bike she dug deep and joined a group that broke away on the 5km run that included world champion and renowned runner Non Stanford of the UK. In the end just seconds separated Flora from second placed Jodie Stimpson of the UK and winner Non Stanford. Flora outsprinted Anne Haug, one of the strongest runners in triathlon, for third.
