As expected Tyler Butterfield had no difficulty in winning the 2016 Tokio Millennium Triathlon in Hamilton, his 5th win in 6 years, whilst Ashley Estanwik took her first major victory on home soil with a suprisingly comfortable victory in the women’s event.
Tyler completed the 750 meter swim, 20k bike and 5km run in 58 mins 21 seconds. 16 year old Matthew Oliviera again made the podium finishing well behind Butterfield but in an excellent time of 1 :04:29 with Mat Thompson producing another consistent performance to finish 3rd overall in 1:05:57.
Ashley trailed 18 year old Erica Hawley by around 1 min 30 secs after the swim but was able to catch Hawley with an impressive bike ride and once in the lead going into T2 she was never going to be caught. Ashley finished an impressive 4th overall in 1:06:26. Erica finished in 1:09:09 with American visitor Megan Kelly 3rd in 1:10:29.
Simon Arnott, Ed Jordan and Jessica Lewis won the Open Team division with Karen Smith, Julia Hawley and Victoria Fiddick taking women’s team honours.
Geoff Smith comfortably won the mens 50+ division finishing an impressive 5th overall. Cora Lee Starzomski was 1st in the womens 40-49 age group.
Earlier in the morning Kamryn Minors used her experience to finish 1st overall in the Tri a Tri Triathlon ahead of the first male finisher Miles Brewer with Madison Brewer in 3rd.
The junior duathlon 11 to 15 year old racing bike category featured some very talented juniors with 13 year old Nick Pilgrim ( 29 mins 37 secs) holding off 12 year old Tommy Marshall (30:19). Caleb Ingham was 3rd in 33:43. Jessie Marshall was the first 11-15 girl and 6th overall in 34.17 with Amber Simons holding off Zoe Hasselkuss for 2nd.
Jasmin Haselkuss showed just what a huge talent she is as she finished first female and first overall in the 7 to 10 racing bike category.Harlan Watson- Brown was the first boy finishing 2nd ahead of brother Flynn Watson-Brown.
The Saltus Knights team of Yannick Hillier, Kaden Hopkins and Ashly Irby were the first team in the school team triathlon.
