Flora Duffy has produced another astonishing performance today in Leeds as she finished 2nd in the World Series race, her highest finish ever.
After a strong swim, Flora broke away with two unfancied British athletes, Lucy Hall and Jess Leamond, with the three of them 1 min 43 secs ahead of favorites that included Gwen Jorgensen going into the bike to run transition.
It looked as though the 1 :43 might be enough going into the four lap run but although she quickly dropped the two British athletes it simply was not a good enough lead to hold off Gwen Jorgensen. Jorgensen, who has only been beaten once in over two years, is simply easily the best runner in women’s triathlon and relentlessly pulled in Flora, catching her just before the start of the last of the four 2.5km run laps. Flora held on well and had time to celebrate with the crowd as she moved one step closer to the top of the podium having had a 3rd and two 4th’s this year.
There was some frustration for Flora as the two British triathletes with her on the bike were given instructions not to allow Flora’s lead to go beyond a minute so it was Flora who had to do most of the work and paid the price on the run.
Great job Flora.
