One of the oldest and most prestigious races on the Bermuda triathlon calendar takes place this weekend, Sunday 3rd July, as local triathletes will vie for the title of Bermuda National Triathlon Champion at the XL Catlin National Olympic Distance Triathlon Championships.
These championships over 750m swim, 40km bike and 10km run get underway at 8AM at Clearwater Beach, St. Davids. Also starting at the same time will be athletes competing over sprint distance (teams and individuals) of 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run as well as juniors.
Entries closed yesterday BUT late entries are being accepted today, Friday 1st July between 4.30and 7PM at the number pick up which is at O’Hara House in Hamilton.
On the men’s side, at press time, Neil Henderson, who was 7th in the recent Tokio Millenium Triathlon, along with Alec Shepherd, 11th in Tokio Millenium, and Tim Paterson and Karl Wilson look to be the likely contenders for a podium position on Sunday unless we see a late entry from, amongst others, Geoff Smith, Spencer Butterfield, Neil Lupsic, Mark Robinson, Jon Herring or Matt Thompson who would certainly be in the mix for overall honours if they entered.
After her excellent and commanding win in the Tokio Millenium Triathlon, Ashley Estanwik will be the overwhelming favorite to take the women;s title on Sunday with last year’s winner Martina Olcheski – Bell and Cora Lee Starzomski likely to take the other podium places.
