Tyler Smith finished 43rd today out of 69 finishers at the ITU 16-19 World Junior Championships. Tyler started the race well exiting the 750 meter swim in 10th place and was in the lead group on the bike. He was part of a group of 32 who finished the 20km bike within a few seconds of each other. Tyler struggled on the run though and lost ground to finish in 58:01. The USA’s Austin Hindman took overall honours in 54:02.
In the women’s race Erica Hawley found herself over a minute down after the swim and ended up in the 4th pack of cyclists leaving herself alot to do going into the run. In the end she finished in 1hr 05 mins 40 secs, a very respectable time which left her in 46th place out of 52 finishers. The race was won by defending champion Taylor Knibb, the outstanding US junior who finished 3rd to Flora Duffy in the senior World Cup in Montreal last month. Knibb finished in 59 :05.
