Jonathan Herring and Karen Smith have lived up to their reputation as race favorites taking top male and female honours in today’s ( July 1st) Bank of Bermuda Foundation Triathlon.
Herring was made to work hard for the win by Eric Soria, a former US Olympic swimmer, who exited the water with almost a minute lead on Herring. However, Jon had a much quicker first transition and marginally quicker bike and first T2 transition to exit T2 just behind Eric going into the 5km run. In the end Jon’s solid run proved the difference as he finished in 1:02:19 with Soria just behind in 1:02:28. Veteran Neil de ste Croix took third in 1:03:45.
Karen Smith had an excellent race as she showed that she is getting back to her best taking 6th place in 1:06:46. Melissa Logie was 2nd in 1:12:26 with Cora Lee Starzomski making a welcome return to the race scene after a nasty accident last year, 3rd in 2:16:10
