After his impressive performance at the Junior World Championships in Rotterdam, Tyler Smith prepared for his move up to the senior ranks in 2018 as this Saturday, 23rd September, he completed the Funchal ETU Sprint Triathlon European Cup (Elite Men) on the island of Madeira, Portugal and finished 29th with a time of 57 mins (flat).

This was Tyler’s final big race of the season and was required to make him eligible to represent Bermuda at the Commonwealth Games in 2018

A full field of 64 elite men lined up for the start on a hot day for what Tyler described as one of the toughest races he has completed.

Tyler was 16th out of the water for the 750m swim with a time of 9:26… right on the heels of his Leeds Triathlon Centre compatriot (and 6th place finisher) Jack Willis.

The 20km bike course featured a tough hill on each of the three laps. Tyler tried leading the second chase pack on the bike but blew up on his last lap and ended up getting dropped shortly before T2 finshing in 28 min 38 secs.

Tyler then had an adequate run of 17:14 for the 5km course which enabled him to stay in the top 30 (and within 5% of the winner’s time) and therefore earn valuable ITU points. The race was won by Italy’s Dalian Stateff in 54 mins 33 secs.

Tyler has now returned to Leeds and on Monday starts his second year studying Sports Science and Physiology at the University of Leeds . Tyler turns 19 on Tuesday 🎂🙂.
