FLORA DUFFY RETAINS LEAD IN ISLAND HOUSE TRIATHLON BUT GAP IS NARROWED

Flora Duffy finished 2nd yesterday as the USA’s Katie Zaferes used her strong bike time trialing ability to narrow the gap on Flora in the Enduro event of the three part Island House Triathlon.

Zaferes, a good friend of Flora’s, finished 3rd in the 2017 Triathlon World Series, and finished the Enduro in 57 mins 51 seconds with Flora 2nd in 58:09 to reduce the gap between them to just 14 seconds going into the final event today. Long distance specialist Holly Lawrence of the UK moved up to third overall but on combined time will start 1 min 38 secs behind Flora over today’s 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run.

In the final sprint event competitors start at intervals according to their time gaps from the leader so Flora will start just 14 seconds ahead of Zaferes.

The men’s event is even tighter going into the final event as the USA’s Ben Kanute holds just a 11 second lead over New Zealand’s Terrenzo Bonzone with South African Henri Schoeman a further 36 seconds back.
