Flora Duffy capped off a remarkable season yesterday ( Sunday 18th November) by winning stage three of the $500,000 Island House Triathlon and thus taking the overall title.
With athletes going out at intervals based on their deficit to the leader after the first two stages, it was Flora who entered the water first for the 750 meter swim with her only realistic challenger, Katie Zaferes, chasing her just a handful of seconds later. However Flora was never going to be caught as she pulled away from Zaferes and by the end of the 20km bike and 5km run she had a comfortable gap finishing in 59 min 18 secs with Zaferes 2nd a minute back in 1 hr 18 secs. That meant that Flora took the overall title with a cumulative time for the three events of 2 hrs 17 mins 39 secs with Zaferes 2nd in 2:18:53. Holly Lawrence of the UK finished 3rd yesterday to hold on to 3rd overall in 2: 20:55 just 17 secs ahead of Kirsten Kasper of the USA who was 4th overall.
In the men’s race Ben Kanute of the USA started the day just 11 secs ahead of New Zealander Terrenzo Bonzone and in an extraordinary finished held off Bonzone to win by 4 tenths of a second in a sprint finish and take the title. Henri Shoeman of South Africa was third.
