BERMUDA TRIATHLON ASSOCIATION 2017 AWARD WINNERS

The annual Bermuda Triathlon Association awards dinner took place last Saturday 20th January at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club.

Flora Duffy and Tyler Butterfield took home the Professional Triathlete of the Year Awards after another outstanding season for both athletes.

Karen Smith, the 2017 National Sprint Champion, once again received the Female Amateur Triathlete of the Year trophy with Matt Thompson, the winner of the Tokio Millenium Re Triathlon, taking his first Male Amateur Triathlete of the Year award.

Alan Potts was a clear winner of the Best New Triathlete male award with a string of impressive performances including winning the National Sprint Championships, a 2nd place finish in the Tokio Millenium Re Triathlon and a 5th place in the Bank of Bermuda Foundation Triathlon.

Liz Stewart has been a revelation in 2017 as she has made significant strides with some excellent results both in Bermuda and over the Ironman 70.3 distance outside of Bermuda and her efforts were recognised with the most improved female triathlete award. The consistent Otis Ingham took the male category.

Maddy Durkin burst onto the local triathlon scene in 2017 taking 2nd in both the National Sprint and Olympic distance National Championships and third in the Tokio Millenium Re. Triathlon so it was no suprise when she was named Best Female New Triathlete.

Alec Shepherd, a BTA director, was recognised for his fantastic efforts on behalf of the BTA in areas such as the annual Blake / Neill Triathlon camp, the 2017 Bermuda Continental Cup Triathlon and the WTS event to be held in April 2018.

Patty Petty has served the BTA with distinction since the association was founded and been an excellent ambassador for our association abroad and once again took home the long service award.

Tyler Smith was recognised for another outstanding season culminating in a fantastic 11th place finish at the ITU Junior Elite Grand Final in Rotterdam where he was just 50 second outside of a podium finish.

After winning the 7-10 age group at the XL Catlin Aon and Tokio Millenium triathlons and finishing 2nd in the Bank of Bermuda Foundation Triathlon, Callum McFarlane was the deserved winner of the 7-10 Junior Triathlete of the Year Award.

Charlotte Millington won the female 7-10 Junior Female Triathlete of the Year award after winning the Bank of Bermuda Foundation, Aon and Tokio Millenium triathlons .

Nick Pilgrim enjoyed another outstanding season in the 13-15 age category wiinig the XL Catlin and Aon triathlons and also finishing an impressive 3rd overall in the Tokio Millenium Re adult event. He, and Caleb Ingham, also raced abroad in various youth 13-15 elite races and produced some excellent results. Nick was therefore the deserved winner of the 13-15 Junior Triathlete of the Year award.

Jessie Marshall took home the female 13-15 honours after dominating the local triathlon scene in her age group and winning the XL Catlin, Aon, Tokio Millenium and Bank of Bermuda Foundation Triathlon. Jessie also represented Bermuda overseas and is emerging as another very promising junior.

WTS SessionsThe organisers of the WTS Bermuda event are holding public information sessions over the next 3 nights, between 5.30-7pm (see venues above). These are to inform the public in some detail about the event on April 28th and the activities around it, the effects the event will have on road closures, public transport etc, and the opportunities available to get involved by volunteering. The organisers are keen that as many people as possible will attend these sessions, in particular those already involved in the local triathlon scene, ie the BTA members.
