Stuart Osborne produced an excellent result in the Zell am See Ironman 70.3 in Austria where freaky weather reduced the event to a swim / run due to an unexpected snowfall. Stuart finished 2nd in the 65-69 age group in 1:48:30 for the 1.9km swim and 21km run with splits of 38:55 and 1:48:30.
RACE REPORT FROM LEA OSBORNE
Unfortunately the weather forecast for the weekend was not good, and much lower temperatures along with heavy rain were forecast. However, no one had counted on snow! The bike course has one steep 14k climb with an equally steep and dangerous decent. Two hours before the race was due to start the decision to cancel the bike leg was made which although disappointing was a great relief to most of the athletes. The start was delayed by 2 hours in keeping with the planned road closures etc and the triathlon became an Aquathon.
It was a rolling start which meant a lot of waiting in 8 degrees, but fortunately the rain had subsided by this time.
Stuart completed the 1.9k swim in 38.55 and the 21k run in 1:48:30 placing him second in his age group 2 minutes behind Austria’s Norbert Plank.
In the pro event, Michael Weiss from Austria took the men’s title and Laura Phillip of Germany won the woman’s race
